Support our fallen Brothers

On January 31, 1973, District #5 Officers Gerald Hempe and Charles Smith were assigned to Squad 95R when they pulled over a vehicle they suspected to be stolen. During the traffic stop, one of the vehicle's occupants became combative and was taken into custody. A bystander who had nothing to do with the traffic stop whatsover casually pulled out a gun and shot both officers to death.   Ben Sanders Jr was convicted of two counts of first degree homicide and sentenced to life in prison. He is up for parole in July and an effort is underway to let the parole board know we haven't forgotten PO'S Hempe and Smith and we want this cop killer to remain behind bars.   Contact info:

A great time was had by all who attended the Police picnic this year.  It was great socializing with former co-workers.  Your association fed 150 members and guests a wonderful lunch.  Thanks to Joyce Michalek for making those arrangements.  We were lucky to catch a little breeze to help temper the heat but no one was complaining.  If you missed it you missed a really good time !!!  See you at the next social in September. See more pictures on the picture page.

LAST GET TOGETHER- By Wray Young

We finished our final “get together” before the summer break with 100 members in attendance, including our guest of honor- retired kitchen coordinator Carole Fisher with her escort- first time attendee Harry Gorecki.  A warm welcome back to Carole, and hope to see both of you again at our next social.  After a short business meeting, we were once again treated to the beautiful melodies of the Brookfield Highlands Ambassadors of Harmony.  This was their fourth appearance at an MRPA social, and they certainly didn’t disappoint.  With over 40 members of the group present, their wonderful music filled the hall.  As usual, MRPA members Darrell Heinzen and Duane Casey were in fine voice.  Enough can’t be said about these guys who have been performing together for over 12 years.  They love to sing, and as evidenced by the thunderous applause from our members, we really enjoyed every minute of the one hour performance.  If you missed this program, we will try to have them for a return performance next season.

After the performance, we were treated by our fine group of kitchen helpers to a delicious bratwurst & baked bean dinner, with all the trimmings.  Thanks so much to Joyce Michalek, Bea Powelski, Dorothy Colburn, Sally Senk and Mariam Bautch for all their work in putting together this wonderful dinner.  We are looking forward to our next regular  Social in September when our new kitchen coordinator Lynne Orley joins this group of women, who are so very important to our organization.   Don’t forget the fun filled  Police Picnic on July 14th and the Annual MRPA Golf Outing on August 17th.  And a real big thank you to Bill Ward who won $105. in the 50/50 raffle, and donated the entire amount back to our organization.  It is generosity like this that keeps MRPA able to present terrific entertainment and programs, great food and drinks, and 9 newsletters every year.

Carrying Concealed firearm – Update May 2010

H.R.218-

If you have been following my updates on the status of H.R.218 as it relates to retired Milwaukee police officers, you know that at our September social, Chief Flynn along with Capt. Gary Gacek and Det. Carol Starr discussed this issue.  They informed us that the Department had put together a certification S.O.P. and sent it on to be reviewed by the Fire & Police Commission.  The Chief stated that he anticipated that by January of 2010, the MPD would be able to begin certifying retired Milwaukee police officers.  Since that time, I have spoken to Mike Tobin, the Executive Director of the Milwaukee Fire & Police Commission on January 29th, April 7th, and again on May 11th.  Each time Mr. Tobin stated to me that the review had not been completed.  On May 11th, he stated to me, “Sorry, I have nothing new to report.  We are still reviewing the certification proposal put forth by OMAP, as is the City of Milwaukee Administration.  H.R.218 is a federal law but not a mandatory one.  Therefore, the City is not required to do anything.”

It is this writer’s opinion that this logjam was created by pure political posturing.  If Mayor Barrett approves the certification process, he will be alienating liberals who hate to see honest citizens having the right to defend themselves by carrying a concealed firearm.  If the Mayor does not approve the certification process, he will be alienating conservatives who believe that the right to bare arms is part of the U.S. Constitution.  Either way, he will be alienating a large block of voters, who just might take it out on him in the November gubernatorial elections.  Therefore, my belief is that he will not let this process move forward until after the election.  The Mayor told me in December that I should speak to Mike Tobin about this issue, because he is handling it.  The Mayor is Mike Tobin’s boss, and it is the Mayor’s responsibility to see that this process moves forward.  If he doesn’t, the Mayor is not doing his job.  If you live in Wisconsin, you can call him at 414-286-2200 to voice your dissatisfaction in his inaction.  Let him know how many years you served and protected the City of Milwaukee, and that you will remember his disregard for that service in the November elections.  If you live out of state, sign up for a concealed firearm license in that state.

HELP SAVE THE 1935 PADDY WAGON

In 1941 the Milwaukee Police Post 415 of the American Legion was given ownership of a 1935 Paddy wagon which was used by the MPD from 1935 to 1941.  For the past 68 years the wagon has been serving the greater Milwaukee area and has served the community in various parades, car shows, and civic functions.  The wagon has been seen in parades in many cities and has carried many politicians and celebrities.  After 74 years of service to the coummunity, the wagon is in desperate need of rejuvenation.  It is estimated that repairs will cost up to $10,000 to keep the wagon running for years to come.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated and with your tax dedcutible donation you'll receive a beautiful wagon pin.  For further information contact Commander Fred Haas at 262-246-5917 or send your donation to:  Milwaukee Police Post 415 Wagon Fund,  P.O. Box 1491,  Milwaukee, WI  53201-1491.
